Math 217: Introduction to Calculus and Linear Algebra in Math

Math 217: Introduction to Calculus and Linear Algebra in MathCalculus and Linear Algebra in math is the study of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, exponents, complex numbers, and differentiation. These subjects are important if you want to enter the workforce as a math teacher or any other jobs requiring an understanding of these subjects. Math 217 provides such knowledge. This program has both subject areas as well as a framework of classes that will help you learn the subject matter well. The first half of the class involves pre-calculus and includes skills required to calculate derivatives and integrals. You will learn both the different units and their methods of conversion to the different types of units. Once you understand these methods, you will be able to calculate solutions for all types of problems involving derivatives. You will also learn the use of the concept of continuity to identify the same derivative that was used previously. The second half of the cla ss consists of a series of practice problems, some of which are based on actual courses taught at UW. You will take on the role of a student to help an instructor to solve problems presented in a problem solving stage. Some of the problems can require a wide range of functions, while others can require you to know simple facts about the operation of a function.Math 217 combines both courses to give you a full course of instruction for your UW degree. The curriculum includes lecture, labs, and a final exam. The lecture part of the class is usually done in weekly or biweekly sessions. Each lecture is delivered by one of the instructors and involves a full lecture followed by a summary of that lecture and a multiple choice question. You will also take advantage of the interactive lab demonstrations from UMBC. These are made up of both hands-on and online exercises. The online lab exercises allow you to practice your application of calculus and linear algebra skills. The final exam is typ ically given once a month. The exam will provide a proof of what you have learned from the class and will give you an opportunity to examine your knowledge against what is given in the course. If you feel you do not fully understand the material presented, there are several resources available online. This allows you to review your material again without having to attend class each day.All in all, math 217 provides both a foundation in mathematical concepts and skill set for students seeking a career in math. If you are considering applying to a number of math teaching jobs or starting a career in math, math 217 can help you prepare for this position. This program is also ideal for those who are looking to transfer from a college or university course into a college course. With the high demand for math teachers and all of the steps involved in being a math teacher, you will need a good base of skill and knowledge.
